ART

ART

I have had the amazing opportunity to come into this school as the new art teacher this year. Which means I haven't had much time to get to know the seniors or see their journey in art through the last four years. However, one student has really stood out to me who pursues her art with passion. She will continue on to study graphic design in college and I cannot wait to see her success! This year's art department award goes to Sydney Hofmeister. Sydney plans to attend Oakland University to study Graphic Design.

BUSINESS

BUSINESS

The perfect person to earn the 2021 LHN Business Department award goes to senior, Cooper Carlin. Cooper earned this award because in many of the businesses classes, he demonstrated classroom leadership, discipline, strong academic ability, and he also has a desire to continue his studies in business beyond LHN. Also, he is an excellent example of Christian leadership and always demonstrates this. I have no doubt that Cooper's future is extremely bright and he will excel in anything he does in his professional life.

GERMAN

FOREIGN LANGUAGE - GERMAN

Due to circumstances beyond anyone’s control, we were unable to have a German 4 class this year. When it came time to choose someone for the German award, I looked back to last year’s German 3 class. While I had several excellent students, one really stood out. Olivia Schienke has been incredible at German since the beginning of German 1. She seems to have a natural knack for understanding the finer points of the German language and mastering some very complicated concepts. Her attitude, work ethic, and dedication were exemplary. Besides being a fantastic scholar, she is also a young lady of tremendous character. It was a joy and privilege to have her in class for three years.

SPANISH

FOREIGN LANGUAGE - SPANISH

This year’s Spanish Department Award winner is a senior who would have been in Spanish 4 this year and exemplified foreign language learning in her three years of Spanish here. She excelled in the four skills of communication: reading, writing, listening, and speaking, achieving academically and also with an infectious enthusiasm. I only got to teach her in Spanish 2, but I do have one memory of her in Spanish 3 last year. Her class stopped by to perform for my students: “Tengo el gozo gozo gozo gozo en mi corazón. ¡¿Dónde?!” “I have the joy joy joy joy down in my heart.” And she clearly did and it didn’t all fit down in her heart. That attitude helped her learn the language and enjoy the process and also helps her communicate – and the main goal of learning a language is communication. So, yo tengo el gozo en mi corazón to announce this year’s Spanish Department Award winner – Grace Ricci.

THEATRE - STAGE

THEATRE - STAGE

Ernest was on the stage Crew Freshman year for the Wizard of Oz, but quickly came out of the wings and was in the ensemble for Shrek. As a sophomore, Ernest was leading Man material as he stepped into the Spot light as King Triton in the Little Mermaid, and the Narrator For Into the Woods. Junior year Ernest wowed and entertained audiences as GASTON, in Beauty and the Beast. His growth as an actor and entertainer was impressive. The Musical Smash-up that was cancelled was some of his finest work, especially SEIZE THE DAY. As a senior Ernest made time for the workshops and was a strong leader in the Hamilton (Yorktown) medley. And of course the jewel in his crown 👑 (as he was the KING) was his role of OBERON, dressed as ELVIS, in Mid Summer’s Night Texas Sized Nightmare. Ernest is not only gifted and talented, he works very hard and is a great leader. He is also willing to wear whatever costume or wig Mrs Freeman chooses for him, without complaint.

Emily Schley hit the ground Running as a freshman at LHN in the Theatre department when during tech week she was pulled up from understudy to Auntie Em in Wizard of Oz. Emily excels in getting off book and creating characters. In Shrek and Into the Woods she led our ensembles. She is excellent on stage and off, encouraging others and being such a good role model. Beauty and the Beast she crossed gender lines and was an amusing LeFou. The Musical Mashup that was cancelled would have been such a great showcase for her singing talents! Senior year got off To a covid start where Emily was very active in the Theatre Workshops and encouraging underclassmen with her leadership skills. But the icing on this four layer cake, was her hilarious portrayal of Director Abigail Yokle in MidSummers Night Texas Sized Nightmare.

THEATRE - technical

Maria is a gifted, talented and dedicated artist. She created beautiful sets for Wizard of Oz, Shrek, Little Mermaid, Into the Woods, Beauty and the Beast and Midsummer‘s Night Texas Sized Nightmare. She was the Assistant Stage Manager for Little Mermaid in training for Stage Manager doe Into the Woods, Beauty and the Beast and MidSummer‘s Night Texas Sized Nightmare. Her art is showcased in the ceiling tiles in the North Hall, Just outside the aux gym. She painted ceiling tiles for Into the Woods, HONK, Alfred Hitchcock taught me EverYthing I know, Annie Play Will Do, and very soon: Mid Summer‘s Night Texas Sized Nightmare.

Emily Reschke started her career at LHN on stage in the Shrek Ensemble. As a sophomore she was a Mersister in the Little Mermaid, but she was also in the ensemble and the Dance Captain. Then she thrilled audiences in Into the Woods as her portrayal of Jack and the GIANT. As a junior she honed her leadership skills as choreographer and Dance Captain for Beauty and the Beast, (in addition to her lead role of BABETTE). The Best show that almost made it before the covid shut down, was our Musical Smashup- Emily choreographed the Show, was dance captain, and still found Time to sing a Solo, and Dance in the Ensemble for many numbers. Emily started Senior year with the same covid restrictions as everyone else, but she led our theatre department out of boredom with some intensive weeks of dance and stage techniques with Cell Block Tango, STOP AND Hamilton‘s Yorktown. She capped off her senior year as student Director- And of course, who could forget her last lead role on our stage, HERMIA in Midsummers Night, Texas Sized Nightmare.

MATHEMATICS

MATHEMATICS

It is my privilege to announce the winner of the year’s Math Department Award. This person has excellence in every math class she has taken during her 4 years here at LHN. Not only that, she has demonstrated an enthusiasm for math and most importantly is always interested in the “how” and “why” of things, not just getting the right answer. So this year’s Math Department Award goes to Julia Zauel!

Provenzano, Anna.JPG

MUSIC - CHOIR

music - CHOIR

Everything this year has been about adaptability and flexibility. Choir has been no different – singing with masks, sitting far away from each other, having so few performance opportunities. In the midst of all this turbulence, it’s refreshing to have some consistency. Anna Provenzano has brought a level of excellence, professionalism, and positivity to the choral program throughout her four year stay at Lutheran North. Even in the face of radical, sometimes unfair change, Anna remains cheerful and passionate about music.

MUSIC - BAND

MUSIC - BAND

The John Phillip Sousa Award for Band is awarded this year to Carlina Galli. Carlina’s excellence has been a constant in my band ever since I started during her Sophomore year. She brings an infectious level of artistry and passion to her growth as a musician that her peers can’t help but notice. The legacy of her musicianship and quiet determination will be felt in the flute section – and even the entire band – for years to come.

Social Studies

SOCIAL STUDIES

Every spring the Social Studies Department meets to discuss which members of the senior class demonstrate not only academic excellence but also exemplary critical thinking skills, which is evident in class participation, peer interaction, and writing. They demonstrate a clear understanding of the content, and seize opportunities to participate in civic activities at Lutheran North as well as throughout the larger community. Kayla Grace has demonstrated exceptional insights into class written assignments as well as her extracurricular participation as a member of the Mock Trial Team. Kayla plans to continue gaining civic knowledge and leadership skills as she pursues a criminal justice degree.
