Admissions for the tournament is free, however we will be taking up a free will offering to support the ChadTough Defeat DIPG Foundation. Tim Finkel (LHN alum ‘97) and his wife Angela’s son Ryder was diagnosed with DIPG back in October.
Well, it’s May, which happens to be Brain Tumor Awareness Month.
It’s also the month that we reach the 7 month mark of what was told to us, is a 12-month prognosis.
At this time last year, Brain Tumor Awareness Month would have been something I simply wouldn’t have given much thought to…but now it consumes me.
On October 19th, 2023, we had to concede that the life we once had, and the path we were on, regardless of outcome…will never be the same. With this comes grief of our expectations.
In the last 7 months, I’ve laughed harder than I ever have in my life, and cried with that same equivalence.
Diffused Intrinsic Pontine Glioma (DIPG) aka Diffuse Midline Glioma (DMG).
Before October, these were words I’d never heard used together in my life. Why would I? On average, only 300 children are diagnosed with this in the United States each year.
The sad reality is, that rare childhood cancers simply don’t nearly get the research funding they need because on paper, their impact is very little.
But in reality, that is 300 families in the US per year with our same story. Who share our same fear and devastation. It’s also 300 communities that are impacted. These families and communities experience a ripple effect that comes with this all. We all share the same sadness, hope, crippling fear, inspiration, laughter, tears, and grief.
A child’s life impacts an immeasurable amount of people. Children are not supposed to die. It’s not the correct order of things.
Our new path we never signed up for, has been one that is paved with love and hope. We’ve been afforded this hope by the generosity of our community and by organizations funding research such as the ChadTough organization.
Our path is far from over, and what lies ahead of us is unknown. Our family no longer has the luxury of making long term plans. We now go day by day, sometimes hour by hour, and try and make each moment as spectacular as possible. It’s not all doom and gloom, there is sanctity in this level of presence that I have immense gratitude for.
If you would like to help continue to provide hope for our family, and the other 299 families per year that could use some hope, please consider donating to the ChadTough Defeat DIPG Foundation in an effort to continue to move the needle on the research required to find a cure, so that the children impacted by DIPG can get back to dreaming and making long term plans.
