Lutheran North’s Cam Kubik proved he was ready to go if something unexpected happened on Friday night.

About 10 minutes prior to the start of its non-league game against Livonia Clarenceville, the unexpected happened when Lutheran North starting quarterback Hudson MacDonald suffered an injury in warmups.

Kubik, the Mustang back-up signal caller, stepped right in and proved he was ready to take over, leading Lutheran North to a 49-6 victory.

“You have to prepare for the unexpected and I would say it’s unfortunate what happened to Hudson (MacDonald),” Mustang coach Garrett Wenzelburger said. “But Cam Kubik prepared all offseason and stepped right into that position and did a great job.”

Following a Trojan turnover to start the game, Kubik scored on a 2-yard run, putting Lutheran North up 7-0 1:30 into the game.

On the Mustangs’ next possession, Kubik connected with Ty Hoel for a 71-yard pass completion, setting up a 17-yard scoring run by Jack May.

Lutheran North was just getting started. On Clarenceville’s ensuing possession, the snap on a punt sailed over the punter’s head, and the Mustangs’ Tai Wargo scooped it up and ran five yards for a touchdown, pushing the lead to 21-0 with 2:24 left in the opening period.

The Mustangs tacked on a 47-yard scoring run by May, a 5-yard TD run by Vincent Campisi, and a Kubik to May 6-yard scoring strike, entering the half with a 42-0 lead.

“We didn’t play a super clean game last week but we seemed to play a cleaner game in all three phases tonight,” Wenzelburger said. “I’m proud of these guys.”

Clarenceville broke up the shutout bid when Jaylan Johnson scored on a 3-yard run in the fourth quarter, before the Mustangs closed out the scoring with a 60-yard TD run by Connor Franz.

“I see that the guys prepared very well in the offseason and have turned themselves into a physical football team,” Wenzelburger said. “No matter what comes during the game, they’re going to give us a chance because of the work they put in the offseason.”

Kubik finished the game completing 5-of-8 passes for 110 yards, all in the first half. May added 106 yards rushing on six carries and had three scores.

“Jack May had a fantastic game,” Wenzelburger said. “He’s fast and when he gets loose, he can take off.”

Wenzelburger also praised the efforts of the guys in the trenches on both sides of the ball.

“Our D-line got after it. They’re tough, strong and physical,” Wenzelburger said. “Our offensive line gave Jack some big holes that he could run through. They’re fantastic on both sides of the ball.”

The win improved the Mustangs’ record to 2-0 overall. Next week, Lutheran North will face Avondale, which Wenzelburger said will start a series of tough tests against good opponents. He’s anxious to see how his team steps up.

“We have a tough stretch here now with Avondale, Detroit Loyola and University Liggett,” Wenzelburger said. “It will be interesting to see when we get into games where we have some tough battles. How are we going to respond to adversity because that’s what we’re going to need to do. We have to have some tougher practices to prepare for a dogfight, because we have some coming.”

Clarenceville, which fell to 1-1 overall, was led by Johnson with 72 yards on 16 carries.
