Artwork for the Atrium

Upon entering Lutheran North the cross relief sculpture to the right created by former art teacher Gary Faszholz was designed to place the focus of our school squarely where it needs to be, on THE CROSS OF CHRIST! The work has an intentional industrial wood/metal look to it because North is in the process of “Building” young Christian men and women!

Three years ago when the new atrium was still in it design stages, already ideas for liturgical artwork was being conjured and rendered in pencil for the space that was about to be. Once the completion has occurred, it was a matter of simply coming up with the proper location and final design and color scheme for the area.

The purpose: The artwork was designed to catch your attention when entering the new atrium and hold your attention. It possesses enough intricate detail that is should invite you to walk closer for a look. The cross itself is made of hundreds pieces of wood cut, shaped, and fit into pattern, and then burned, sanded, and painted to create a rugged black cross. The red cross reminds us what it cost. The words cut out in metal tell us of our Lutheran Heritage and what we believe.

BLACK = all of our sins carried to that cross by Jesus

RED CROSS = Jesus blood shed for me and you

WHITE = Jesus purity

SOLA GRATIA = Grace

SOLA CHRISTUS = Christ

SOLA FIDE = Faith

SOLA SCRIPTURA = Bible

Because of these 4 Solas we at Lutheran North always declare

SOLA DEO GLORIA = TO GOD BE THE GLORY

special thanks to mike kearney for helping with the installation of the cross.
