DETROIT — A deep blast to right field.

One of those blasts that Miguel Cabrera or Mike Trout would have proud to autograph.

The author of that home run belted in bottom of the sixth inning of the Catholic League C-D Division softball championship game was Lutheran North freshman Reagan Ruatto.

Justifiably excited, she raced around the bases.

Certifiably disappointed, she was called out after the umpire ruled she missed third base.

Incredibly focused, Ruatto was able to snare a sizzling line drive and corral a tricky ground ball to make two putouts in the top of the seventh as the Lutheran North Mustangs defeated Bishop Foley 8-6 in the title game at the University of Detroit Mercy on Monday.

“I thought I touched first,” said Tustto afterwards. “It was a little frustrating.”

She is one of seven ninth graders on the Lutheran North team.

It was the Mustangs’ first trip to the championship game since joining the Catholic League in 2011.

“I would say that we probably exceeded expectations, especially considering how young we are,’ said Duane Anger, the Lutheran North coach.

Lutheran North trailed 2-0 heading into the fourth inning.

The Mustangs put four runs on the board in the fourth and fifth innings.

In the fourth, sophomore Lauryn Rhodea smacked an RBI single. Later, Reese Shock hit a fly ball to left that eluded the Bishop Foley fielder to score two more runs.

In the fifth, freshman Emma Shannon hit a run-scoring double. Freshman Elizabeth Kandahar singled to the fence to score two.
